American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Course - Spring Break

American Red Cross In-Person Lifeguarding Course

Participants will be required to attend a pre-course session on Friday April 4th from 4pm-7pm and complete the 2 course prerequisites listed below. All participants are required to be at least 15 years of age before the final day of the course (April 10th, 2025).

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

After successfully completing the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation you will alternate between the classroom and water as you learn and practice lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR/AED skills. Participants will be required to attend all in-person sessions of the course.

Course Dates & Times:

  • Monday April 7th - 8am-5pm
  • Tuesday April 8th - 8am-5pm
  • Wednesday April 9th - 8am-5pm
  • Thursday April 10th - 8am-5pm

At the end of your final in-person session you will take a 50 question written exam and a 3 final skills assessment to evaluate your individual rescue skills, and your ability to perform a rescue as part of a team and your surveillance and rotation skills. The final skills assessment will include:

  • An individual, timed response; you will perform a submerged rescue in followed by extrication, rapid assessment (with two ventilations) and 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR.
  • Surveillance skills: Rotate to the lifeguard station, conduct surveillance, and then rotate out of the station.
  • Multiple Rescuer response; you will perform a submerged rescue, extricate the person followed by work with a team of other rescuers to demonstrate clear communication and critical thinking ability while providing care using BVM, CPR and AED. You will be evaluated on both individual performance, and overall team response performance.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Course

Participants will be required to attend a pre-course session on Wednesday May 7th from 4pm-9pm and complete the course prerequisites listed below. All participants are required to be at least 17 years of age before the final day of the course (May 28th, 2025).

Prerequisite 1: Possess a current basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including deep water) with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and First Aid.

Prerequisite 2: Complete the required online session prior to the first day of the course. 

Prerequisite 3: Complete the prerequisite skill assessment scenario in the following skills:

  • Entry & Approach
  • Surface dive in deep water
  • Passive submerged rescue 
  • Rapid extraction (with assisting rescuer)
  • Rapid assessment
  • Single-Rescuer CPR (3 minutes)

After successfully completing the course prerequisite evaluation you will then move into the in person portion of the course where you will participate and be evaluated in multiple practice teachings both in-classroom and in-water. Participants will be required to attend all in-person sessions of the course.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification

The Lifeguarding Recertification course is designed to refresh your knowledge and skills. Upon successful completion, you will renew your certification for another two years. 

The latest blended learning course, r.24 that includes online + in-person skill demonstration, features adaptive learning, where participants can test out of the online content they already know, allowing participants to ensure they are prepared. The result is a custom learning path for each student in the online portion of the blended learning recertification course. The online portion of the course must be completed prior to the in-person session.

To participate in the Lifeguarding Recertification class you must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days.

Course Date & Time:

  • Saturday May 17th - 11am-6pm

During the course, individuals will have the opportunity to review and practice their skills. Participants must pass the final written test and the three (3) final skill assessments which include:

  • Assessment 1 - Timed Response 
    • Participants must complete a passive submerged rescue, extricate with the assistance of an assisting rescuer, and rapid assessment (including the delivery of 2 initial ventilations by either rescuer) within 1 minute, 30 seconds, and then provide 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR.
  • Assessment 2 - Rotation and Scanning 
    • Participants must rotate into the lifeguard station, conduct surveillance from the station for 1 minute, and rotate out of the station.
  • Assessment 3 - Final Team Response Testing Scenario 
    • Participants must perform a passive submerged rescue, extrication and rapid assessment, followed by multiple-rescuer CPR and use of AED and BVM resuscitator.

PHTA Certified Pool Operator Course

CPO® certification courses are designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations. The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 342,623 successful CPO® certifications in 86 countries. Many state and local health departments accept the CPO® certification program. Instructors receive comprehensive training and certification to teach the CPO® certification program. These instructors represent every segment in the aquatics industry including operators, health officials, service professionals, builders, manufacturers, property managers, retailers, and academicians. This training has helped protect millions of swimmers by reducing hazards at aquatic facilities.

Course Fees:

$375.00 per person which includes Instructional material, PHTA certification fee and course expenses and 1 Current CPO handbook. Please bring a handheld calculator with you to the course. Attendance to all sessions is mandatory to qualify to take the CPO exam. 

  • If you are unable to attend the course you registered for, you must notify us three weeks before the first day of the class to get a full refund.
  • Cancellations within 3 weeks of the first day of class will be charged a $50.00 cancellation fee.
